foo_bluetooth_ctrl 1.1 beta2 source released

A big thanks to the user pointing out that I’d forgotten to release the source code for the newest release of foo_bluetooth_ctrl. It’s available now, and it’s FREE!

I’d very much appreciate it if you would help out fixing bugs!

Site commemorating Princess Galyani (Thailand) censored

“Freedom Against Censorship Thailand (FACT) demands an immediate apology by the Finnish government to the Royal Family, the Thai people and the Thai government, all of whom are still in mourning for the Princess’ death.”

Finland labels Princess Galyani portrait kiddie porn-Effi

Let’s just hope that this helps wake the Finnish government up.

UPDATE: Ok, a commenter on the FACT blog pointed out some suspect pictures found by doing a google image search of the site in question. I don’t know what’s up with this, but I still don’t condone censorship.

Censorship does not solve problems, it just substitutes them with worse problems.

So this is how democracy ends

“So this is how democracy ends. To thunderous applause.” — Sen. Amidala, a.k.a. Padme Naberrie-Skywalker, Revenge of the Sith

For those of you not following the debate about censoring the internet due to distribution of child porn in Finland, let me fill you in on the rough points:

  1. A law was passed allowing (or forcing?) censorship of foreign websites distributing child porn. (note foreign)
  2. The finnish police (Keskusrikospoliisi, KRP) started distributing a “secret” list of censored websites to the ISPs in Finland. The ISPs “should” (but are not required to?) redirect these addresses to a page saying that the site in question has been censored due to it distributing child porn.
  3. Matti Nikki starts a site (non-blocked) publishing a list of the censored sites, concluding that the majority of the censored sites are completely legal (i.e. don’t contain child porn). Mr Nikki tries, through this site, to start a discussion about censorship not being a solution to the problem, but effectively allowing the real underground child porn bastards to continue business as usual. (by using e.g. opendns.org)
  4. The police censor mr Nikki’s site, which
    • is hosted in Finland, thus falls outside of the censorship law
    • does not contain any kind of child porn, thus falls outside of the censorship law
  5. Electronic Frontier Finland ry, EFFI, requests the Justice chancellor to investigate whether the censorship law is at all legal and whether the police can censor whichever website they want. (Go EFFI!)
  6. Our minister of communication, mrs Suvi Lindén says that we cannot discuss distribution of child porn under the guise of free speech HS.fi. WTF?

Mr Nikki’s site did at one point contain a link to a site distributing child porn. He wrote about it himself, since he had found the site a year ago and reported it to the authorities. The site is, according to mr Nikki, still in operation. Unbelievable. How hard would it have been for the authorities to contact the hosting provider? Mr Nikki did remove the link to the site in question. (Disclaimer: I have not checked any of the links myself, I trust mr Nikki’s list as to what is behind the links.)

My opinion is that the people distributing child porn should be put behind bars and have the key thrown away. Not censored.

Shouldn’t sites containing child porn be shut down completely? That is, after they are independently verified to contain child porn. Not blocked by easily circumvented DNS-filters.

We must be allowed to discuss all kinds topics, no matter how immoral, illegal or awkward!

Welcome to New China, I wish you all good luck.
